Petrol engines rely on spark ignition — the spark plugs ignite a fine mist of petrol mixed with air. Diesel fuel is much heavier and doesn't vaporise as easily, so it doesn't ignite properly when the spark fires. Instead, it coats the spark plugs with oily residue, causing misfires.
