Put diesel in your petrol car? We'll sort it fast.

While less common than petrol in diesel — the larger diesel nozzle usually doesn't fit a petrol filler neck — it does still happen, particularly with older vehicles or jerry cans. Diesel fuel is heavier and oilier than petrol, and it won't ignite properly in a petrol engine. It coats the spark plugs, clogs fuel injectors, and can block the catalytic converter with thick, unburned fuel residue. The good news is that diesel in a petrol car is generally less immediately destructive than the reverse — but it still needs professional attention.

Our Process

How It Works

Our simple 4-step process gets you back on the road quickly and safely.

1

Don't Start the Engine

If you realise at the pump, stop fuelling immediately and don't turn the key. If you've already started, switch off as soon as it's safe.

2

Call Our 24/7 Line

We'll dispatch a mobile fuel drain unit to your exact location right away. Average arrival time is 30–60 minutes across the Highlands.

3

Drain & Clean

We remove all diesel-contaminated fuel from your tank, purge the fuel lines, and clean or replace the fuel filter.

4

Fresh Fuel & Go

We refill with the correct petrol, start the engine, and monitor it to ensure smooth running before we leave.

Expert Advice

What You Need to Know

How Diesel Affects a Petrol Engine

Petrol engines rely on spark ignition — the spark plugs ignite a fine mist of petrol mixed with air. Diesel fuel is much heavier and doesn't vaporise as easily, so it doesn't ignite properly when the spark fires. Instead, it coats the spark plugs with oily residue, causing misfires. The unburned diesel passes through to the catalytic converter, where it can cause overheating and blockage. The oxygen sensors and lambda probes can also be fouled, triggering engine management warnings.

Is It Less Serious Than Petrol in Diesel?

Generally, yes. A petrol engine doesn't rely on fuel for internal lubrication in the same way a diesel common-rail system does, so the risk of catastrophic pump failure is lower. However, driving for an extended period on diesel will still cause damage — particularly to the catalytic converter and exhaust system. The sooner you stop and get the fuel drained, the less it will cost to put right. In most cases, a professional drain and flush is all that's needed.

What If I Only Put a Small Amount In?

Even a small amount of diesel in a petrol tank — say 5–10% — can cause noticeable running problems. The engine may start but will run rough, misfire, and produce excessive smoke. It's not advisable to try to 'dilute' the diesel by topping up with petrol. The safest and most cost-effective approach is always a professional fuel drain. This removes any risk of damage to expensive components like the catalytic converter.

On-Site Service

What to Expect When We Arrive

Our technician will drain the contaminated fuel from your tank using a specialist extraction unit, then flush the fuel lines and replace or clean the fuel filter. Fresh petrol is added from our on-board supply, and we'll run the engine for several minutes to clear any residual diesel from the system. Most diesel-in-petrol drains take 40–60 minutes. We'll monitor engine performance and check for warning lights before signing off.
